The Self-spooling Catch Tray for the toneCarrier 120 film holder is designed to safely catch your film as it's being scanned and automatically roll it back into a neat spool after exiting the holder. It also keeps the film off the table and protects it from scratches, as all contact is along the film edge, far from the image area. A magnetic hinge keeps everything contained until you are ready to remove the film.
The Tone dslr scanning system is a hit with me. The design is brilliant! The silicone wheels are slightly offset to pull the film flat across it's width, and the double "S" path uses the film's own plastic memory of curling towards the emulsion to provide the tension lengthwise to flatten the film longitudinally. I paired it with an old laptop that I installed MX Linux and Entangle to monitor the negatives as I turn the advancement dials. Finally, I can get perfectly centered shots showing the rebate, and while sitting down. Loading could not possibly be simpler - just push the film in until it hits the wheels, and advance by turning the knob counter clockwise. I purchased both the 120 kit, and the 35mm kit (that is why there are so many chimneys in the photos). I've done a bunch of scans with both - 6x7cm to half frame 35mm. No jams, easy operation, and it is fast. Excellent design and engineering.
Damaged multiple negatives. They keep getting stuck/jammed inside.
I am having the same issue as the other review, where the film just never stays within the guides. I would be interested in a different version with a less aggressive curve to avoid this issue. I don't care about the lid, I just want something to keep it off the table at the end.
I love this concept, the equivalent 35mm works flawlessly. Unfortunately with the 120, the film rarely stays within the guides. This means it often gets stuck. I use mine with the top open and guide the film by hand.
